Surface Exploration – The Black Hills

I just came back from The Black Hills, South Dakota, doing some exploration/vacationing with my wife. The land is beautiful out there; it just goes to show that the great sights aren’t only in D’ni and their Ages, not that I don’t like being back home with my friends in the Cavern. We journeyed into Wind Cave and Jewel Cave and it reminded me much of D’ni. Their motto in those National Parks, though, is to change as little as possible, so whereas D’ni has buildings and structures being restored, Jewel and Wind Cave are very close to what their original state was.

Back home, the MystLive.com site is up and running. I am trying to spread the word to the Hoods about Myst Live, and many think it is a good idea, but I suppose we’ll get more Hoods to join up when the DRC finally begins to open up the Cavern to us again. Until then, I’m treking along. I recently got laid off, but other prospects and opportunities are opening themselves to many. Hopefully soon I will find another job to fund my explorations in D’ni.

See you all in the Cavern!

The House

I have received some journals and a brief explanation from a friend of mine, Alex Dean. His story intrigues me, and it comes along just in time for NanNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month for November. I will try to examine the materials he gave me and compile my thoughts for this. His story is… very fascinating.

The first thing he told me about, when he frantically knocked on my door last night, was the House. A House stood in the middle of a flat desert. No plants. No rocks. Nothing but a small, disheveled house and a road stretching off into the horizon in either direction. At the very edge of his vision were mountains, again on all points of the horizon. But the House… He described it as a portal to other places, other times… even other worlds. The House appears much bigger on the inside. The House, he tells me, is actually an inward excursion, peering into your own mind. But through it, you can go anywhere….

An Introduction

You may have seen me in various forums, or here and there down in the cavern, but I’d like to take this moment to formally introduce myself. My name is Dan’nee. Some have mispronounced it as Dah’nee, but I’m not too particular.

I’m a writer, mainly. I’ve grown up writing fiction, science fiction and fantasy in particular, but I’ve tried my hand here or there at non-fiction. This fascination meshed very well with the Myst series. As many of you, I thought that Myst, and then Riven and Exile, were just games. The Myst books, especially, attracted me to the series, so a thank you to David Wingrove for that. But now we know that the D’ni are real, and so I anxiously await the reopening of the DRC and the Cavern in December. This is a perfect chance to do some good research for my writing. I will contribute in this blog my experiences, but hopefully my explorations will inspire me further.

I’m not a writer by profession, as some may have noticed. I’m a programmer. <shrug> It’s my day job. But the D’ni culture, language, and Ages have fascinated me for a long time. Only recently did I begin to make some exploration into the current areas open in Ae’Gura, so another thanks to Budgie2 and all those who helped me when I first arrived. Let’s make this a great experience for us all!
